It’s not about your own weight only

As I reflect on this past year, I want to tell you about a very powerful and critical principle used in the best rowing teams around the world. We are often led to believe that as long as I do “my bit” or “carry my weight” (meaning just do what is expected of me) then that’s enough.

You see, in successful rowing teams there comes a time in the boat when you shouldn't just be pulling your own weight. You should pull your share of the group's collective weight and responsibility. This means going beyond what is expected of me and helping out where I know there may be a weakness. The other amazing aspect of rowing is not the speed at which you row, but the power you put into each stroke.

This past year has presented us with a number of opportunities to reach out beyond our immediate responsible areas, and I cannot tell you how encouraged and impassioned this makes me for the business and our path ahead. I am confident our people and teams will help set us apart from competitors and help us build a platform of Excellence.

Don’t embark on your life and tasks at speed, take it slow and put the power into all you do. Make every stroke count for you and our wonderful company.

For those of you taking leave soon, be safe during your holiday and I look forward to seeing my team, customers and suppliers rejuvenated in the new year.
